Dear Editor:

Hidden in Ethan Bronner's article, "The Bullets in My in-Box," is the crux to the Arab-Israeli conflict: "when, for example, I ... write about Israel in ways that do not call into question its legitimacy — I have revealed my affiliation and can no longer be trusted as a reporter."

Clearly, for "the other side," the problem has nothing to do with Israel's behavior; the problem is Israel's very existence.

Reporting which gives the same respect and credence to those whose goal is the destruction of a free, democratic member of the community of nations as it does to those who believe Jews have the same right as other peoples to their own sovereign state is both deceiving readers and helping to perpetuate a conflict which will continue until its root cause, the unwillingness of Israel's enemies to accept its existence, is eliminated.

Sincerely,
Alan H. Stein
