To the editor:

Much of Kenyan Malik's analysis of "The British Left's Jewish Problem'" shows insight, but he confuses anti-Zionism with legitimate criticism. He does not seem to realize that, with one rare exception, anti-Zionism is a modern, virulent form of anti-Semitism.

The rare exception: anti-Zionism on the part of a post-nationalist who opposes all national liberation movements. Unfortunately, most anti-Zionists support other nationalisms, such as that of the Palestinian Arabs, but single out for opposition the national liberation movement of the Jewish people. Those anti-Zionists are anti-Semitic.

Sincerely,

Alan Stein
