To the editor:

The examples given by Elhanan Miller in "Why Mahmoud Abbas is Israel's Best Partner for Peace" merely demonstrate that Abbas, like Yasser Arafat before him, has no qualms about giving contradictory messages to different audiences.

A true "partner for peace" would not have walked away from the table in 2008 after being offered a sovereign Palestinian Arab state in the equivalent of 100 percent of the disputed territory. A true "partner for peace" would not demand the release of mass murderers as a bribe to pretend to negotiate for a few months. A true "partner for peace" would not insist he would not allow a single Israeli in a future Palestinian state and would not boast that he would never make a single concession on any of the core issues.

When it comes to peace, it takes two to tango. In Israel, we're still waiting for a partner.

Sincerely,

Alan Stein
