To the editor:
The editorial "Donald Trump's 'Ultimate Deal'" incorrectly states "since the 1993 Oslo peace accords, the United States has been committed to a two-state solution." Although there were some hints of change during the ill-fated Camp David Talks in 2000 and the Clinton parameters, it was only President Bush, in 2002, who, in my opinion unwisely, actually changed the official American policy opposing the establishment of another Palestinian Arab state.
What The New York Times observes as signs that President Trump is "glimpsing the complexity of the task before him" strike me as signs he is succumbing to pressure to continue the disastrous, misguided policies, such as refusing to locate the American embassy in Israel's capital, which have been such an impediment to a real peace process by rewarding the intransigence of the Palestinian Arabs. Their intransigence and their refusal to abandon their dream of destroying Israel, remain the core reasons the peace which seemed so possible in 1993 is today so obviously unlikely to occur for generations.
Sincerely,
Alan Stein
