Letter to the editor: What Silence?

To the editor:

I was astounded to read Michelle Alexander write her recent column, "Time to Break the Silence on Palestine." One must ask: what silence?

I won't go into any of the gross factual errors spread throughout the column, but arguably no other issue has been the subject of more noise than "Palestine." And few deserve less attention.

There are dozens of truly oppressed but stateless national groups who, unlike the Palestinian Arabs, have not repeatedly rejected offers of sovereignty. If it's time to break the silence, how about breaking the silence on the Kurds? or the Tibetans?

How many times do the Palestinians have to reject statehood before people like Alexander get the message that they don't really care about sovereignty but only care that the Jewish people don't have sovereignty in our homeland?

Sincerely,

Alan Stein

The Comedian: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Speaking to a reporter at the United Nations headquarters, Ban Ki-moon, apparently with a straight face, said: "I don't think there is discrimination against Israel at the United Nations."
